Wiper blades are an important part of preventative car maintenance yet are often overlooked until it’s too late. Imagine: you’re driving down the road and it begins to rain, only for you to find out that your wipers are smearing or skipping, as opposed to helping with visibility. This is a sure sign that it’s time to replace your wiper blades.

Do you know how to tell it’s time to replace your wiper blades?

1. A good rule of thumb is that you should change your wiper blades every six months. Even if it doesn’t rain often or you don’t find yourself using your wiper blades, the snow, heat, and other weather can cause your blades to deteriorate.

2. Change your wiper blades for damage. By routinely checking for damage such as a broken frame, metal corrosion, cracks or tears in the rubber piece, or ensuring the rubber is securely in place will help indicate whether a replacement is needed.

3. Your wiper blades are causing low visibility. Smearing and streaking can occur from a deteriorated rubber piece and built up oil, tree sap, or other foreign substances on the blades. Lightly wiping of the rubber piece of the blade can help avoid this problem.

If you still aren’t sure when to change wiper blades, your NAPA AutoCare service technician will be glad to check your wipers when you are having regular service and recommend the best blade for your automobile. Replacing your blades in a timely manner can improve your visibility on the road and prevent damage to your windshield.
